UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is developing a digital immigration system. This means they are replacing physical documents with an online record of your immigration status. This is known as an eVisa.
If you use a physical or legacy paper document to prove your immigration rights, go to www.gov.uk/evisa to find out what you need to do next, and when you can do it. You must make this change by 31 December 2024.
Updating your physical document to an eVisa does not affect your immigration status or the conditions of your permission to enter or stay in the UK.
An eVisa is an online record of:
- your immigration status
- the conditions of the type of permission you have to enter or stay in the UK
To help ensure a smooth transition to eVisas, airlines and other carriers will be able to accept BRPs and EU Settlement Scheme BRCs expiring on 31 December 2024 or later as evidence of permission to travel to the UK, provisionally until 31 March 2025. This will be kept under review. Passengers will remain subject to the usual immigration checks and requirements, and anyone seeking to enter the UK whose underlying immigration status has expired will be liable for refusal of entry.
Pendle New Neighbours has already helped more than 150 refugees and asylum seekers set up their eVisas since September.
